Dulcimer
Tunings
Dulcimer Fling!
is meant to be enjoyed whether you're
a dulcimer player or not.
But because we're
dedicated to spreading Dulcimania, we give
you here the cut number, the type of tune
played (reflecting its rhythm), the key it
is in, and the dulcimer tunings we used to
play it.
All tunings are
given as bass string-middle string-melody
string(s).
To create a depth of
tone and to highlight both traditional and
contemporary playing styles, Jay played
most tunes with a noter on double-melody
strings (eg, D-A-DD), while Leo played
finger-style on all single strings
(D-A-D).
On all but one of
Jay's tunings, he used a "double melody"
string, in which two side-by-side strings
are played together as a single string to
increase the volume of the "melody"
string, especially when the noter is used
and the other two strings play unchanged
as "drones." On "Winter's End," the four
strings were separated equally from one
another and Jay played the dulcimer as a
four-stringed instrument. Very
unusual.
